Benchmarks Each young adult is as unique as their individual experiences, but several key components to this stage of life create momentum from the high school phase to adulthood. This life stage is something of a watershed time in the young adult's life, where they face seemingly unlimited choices about independence, careers, and how they interact with the world. Spiritual Young adults are on a quest for independence. They are asking key questions about God, themselves, and their place in the world. Young adults are seeking churches that are relational and welcoming while taking young adults and their faith journey seriously. Social This phase of life involves solving a puzzle made up of three life conundrums. Young adults are trying to figure out who they are, where to find stability in their ever-changing world, and how to make wise choices in a culture of plentiful possibilities. Young adults are looking to create meaning in all facets of their life—their work, their relationships, and how they invest themselves. Emotional During this life stage, young adults are faced with creating new personas for themselves and leaving their high school labels behind. With added external factors like social media and fierce competition, young adults might experience insecurity and question their past choices. With an abundance of freedom and opportunities now available, a hopeful exuberance fills this life stage. Intellectual This life stage allows young adults to move from passive to active participants in their own learning. Their emerging independence creates space for them to embrace their passions and focus their attention on the areas of study that really excite them. Physical Young adults are nearly finished with puberty, but their brains are still developing, and this season of their lives is often associated with riskier thinking and daredevil courage. This is the time in life when the brain is creating the passageways that are essential to making wise "adult" decisions. Young Adults • 2 • cph.org • Copyright © 2019 Concordia Publishing House
