vbs.cph.org/2019 1 Bible Story: God Made the Universe Genesis 1–2:2 Bible Memory Verse: "I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made." Psalm 139:14 Read Genesis 1–2:2. Think on these things: God so loved the world, that He created the universe and you and me! Genesis 1:1–2 The Bible clearly states that God created the world. God alone has the power to bring the world into existence from nothingness. Genesis 1:3–8 God's Word has power. God spoke and it was so. God's speech performed what He said. On Day 1, God spoke and light was. Then He separated light and darkness. On Day 2, God spoke and separated the waters on earth and the water in the heavens. Each day, there was an evening and a morning. Genesis 1:9–23 Days 3–5 were busy! God spoke and created the earth, seas, plants, sun, moon, stars, sea creatures, and birds. God filled His creation. God spoke and blessed His creation to be fruitful and productive. God saw that His creation was good. Take-Home Point: God made me. That's true! That's God! Looking around at the vast universe, it's easy to feel small and insignificant. Kids wonder, "What am I here for?" Genesis emphasizes how God loved us from the very beginning. In the beginning, our eternal God was. Our almighty God speaks and a universe is created. That's a miracle, something only God can do. In that miracle, our wise God designed orderly function of the solar system and our human bodies. Our God's imagination and creativity is seen in sunsets, blossoms, soft baby cheeks, and spiders. Genesis 1:24–31 Day 6 was a game changer. God created living creatures on the land and declared them good. In verses 26–27, He made man, male and female, "in Our image, after Our likeness" (v. 26). He not only blessed them to be fruitful and to multiply, but He also assigned them to rule over the rest of His creation. In a great ending to Day 6, God looked over everything and declared it very good. Genesis 2:1–2 On Day 7, God rested from His work. He blessed that day and made it holy. As VBS leaders, we have a role to play as God uses us to share His miraculous mission to save the world through Jesus. That's great news! Our loving God has also created you and me—He uniquely and wonderfully made us—and He has a plan for us today and eternally. Even after the fall into sin, God's love for us remains. God's miraculous mission to save us through Jesus shows that love. God creates saving faith in us through the Gospel and provides for all our needs of body and soul, now and forever. Prayer: Creator God, be with us as we share Your miraculous mission with the kids at VBS. We thank and praise You that You created us, love us, saved us, and keep us now and forever because of the mission accomplished by our Savior, Jesus. In His name we pray. Amen.
