As a professor of organ, fine arts program director, and organist himself, Burkhardt compiled these moderately easy to moderately difficult pieces to celebrate and teach chorale prelude treasures. On the Balance between Historical Music and the Recent Past "I think when we choose music from traditional classic repertoire to compositions of today, we are really showing what the church is like and who the church is made up of (i.e., a community of faith united with Christians past, present, and future). It also can—with the recent plethora of new things coming out in hymnody—help us meet people of other cultures and communities and know that we have something we share." On the Variety within the Collection "I wanted organists to experience literature based on all kinds of songs that we sing in worship, including chants, Victorian hymns, and the German chorale, in addition to more recent tunes. The compositions, in a variety of styles, textures, and forms, remind us how important it is to play and share a broad repertoire in worship." Advice for Musicians "Do a lot of singing. I believe when we sing every hymn or song that we ask our congregation to sing, we learn so much about tempo, pulse, and breath as related to text and tune. In addition, we may learn where our congregation might have difficulty singing a tune or articulating a text. All this totally shapes how we will lead when we sit down at the bench. My goal is that the organ be a singing instrument! When we organists connect our breath to the breath and 'winding' of the instrument, it becomes one, and that in turn engages the breath of the congregation joining us at the time, uniting us as one in our praises, prayers, and thanksgivings to our gracious God!" "I'm hoping this collection pays tribute to Lutheran and other denominational composers for the gifts of music they have given us and that those gifts can continue living on through musicians today." These pieces represent some of the best titles previously found in The Concordia Hymn Prelude Series, The Parish Organist, Preludes for Hymns in the Worship Supplement, and several other individual collections. Prefacing every piece is an informational page giving background information about the tune (its source, form, and melodic characteristics) and the organ setting (its composer, publication source, compositional aspects, and suggested registration). This collection is of great use for both worship and academic situations, encouraging organists to learn and share a broad, balanced repertoire that includes music of the recent past.
