The Appian Way is an ancient road system
that traversed through the heart of the
Roman Empire. Along with the Silk Road,
it was one of the most strategically
important roads in the entire world.
As a road, the Appian Way was a form of technology: de-
signers, craftsmen, and laborers with tools in hand built
this roadway. And, flowing from the heart of Rome to the
surrounding cities, this ancient form of technology permit-
ted people, ideas, and goods to course through the arteries
of the Roman Empire.
