The Appian Way is an ancient road system that traversed through the heart of the Roman Empire. Along with the Silk Road, it was one of the most strategically important roads in the entire world. As a road, the Appian Way was a form of technology: de- signers, craftsmen, and laborers with tools in hand built this roadway. And, flowing from the heart of Rome to the surrounding cities, this ancient form of technology permit- ted people, ideas, and goods to course through the arteries of the Roman Empire.
